Jon was a friend and teammate of Dennis during their playing days in the SJABA where they competed with & against each other for a number of years. Jon met Dennis while he was in college & university and built a great friendship through the game of basketball. They even had the pleasure of winning the men’s provincial title together back in 2017.

Upon the tragic passing of Dennis, the basketball community was absolutely devastated. With his large involvement in the scene, Jon along with many of Dennis’ friends & teammates felt something should be done in his memory. With Jon taking the lead and having the support of Dennis’ family, the Dennis Squires Memorial Tournament was created in 2018. The tournament serves as place to share the love of the game and to help spread awareness about suicide prevention. All money raised is donated to the Canadian Mental Health Association NL, with hopes of helping the mental health needs of others. The tournament has received such tremendous support and continues to grow each year!

Alongside Dennis’ sister Lori, Jon is honoured to be able to help Dennis’ legacy live on through the thing he loved most; the game of basketball!
